What Are Dental Implants?

100% Implant Replacement Guarantee

Dr. Shroyer and Dr. Moore stand behind every implant that they place with an unconditional 100% replacement guarantee at no cost to you.

A natural tooth consists of a root and a crown. An implant-retained replacement tooth has the same basic parts. The dental implant has a crown (the visible part of the restoration above the gum line that serves as a food chewing surface and is provided by your general dentist). The implant itself acts as the restoration’s “root”, as it is anchored through the gum and into the bone of the jaw and used as the receptor for the crown. Dental implants are fashioned from titanium which is the same time-tested material used by orthopedic surgeons to recreate artificial joints of the body.

When you lose a tooth, both the root and the crown are lost. Drs. Shroyer or Moore serves to provide the first stage of the replacement process when he skillfully chooses the accurate site for the new “root” and surgically places the titanium dental implant in the jaw.

Over time, the bone grows around the metal and attaches to the dental implant under the gum line, creating a solid bond with the titanium. A strong foundation for the artificial tooth develops. A support post (abutment) is then placed on top of the implant and a new crown is screwed or cemented onto the abutment. A variety of treatment options are available for the replacement of one missing tooth or the replacement of multiple missing teeth.

Time is allowed for the bone to heal and grow around the dental implant. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. A support post (abutment) is then placed on the implant and a new replacement tooth (crown) is placed on top of the abutment. In many cases, a temporary replacement tooth can be attached to the implant immediately after it is placed. If all of your teeth are missing, a variety of treatment options are available to support the replacement teeth.

Surgical Advances

Using the most recent advances in dental implant technology, Drs. Shroyer or Moore are able to place single stage implants. These implants do not require a second procedure to uncover them but do require a minimum of six weeks of healing time before artificial teeth are placed. There are even situations where the implant can be placed at the same time as the tooth extraction—further minimizing your number of surgical procedures.

Dental implant placement is a team effort between an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and a restorative dentist. Drs. Shroyer or Moore will perform the actual implant surgery, tooth extractions, and bone grafting if necessary. The restorative dentist (your dentist) fits and makes the permanent prosthesis. Your dentist will also make any temporary prosthesis needed during the implant process.
