Before Intravenous Sedation/Anesthesia

Before Intravenous Sedation/Anesthesia

Sedation/Anesthesia will be administered by giving drugs into an arm vein to achieve the desired level of relaxation.

Patients will feel calm, relaxed, and drowsy while being completely unaware of the surgical procedure.

A local anesthetic will then be administered to numb the surgical site.

1. No food or drink (including water) within 8 hours of the appointment time.

2. The antibiotic (Augmentin) and mouth rinse (Peridex) should be started the evening before your scheduled procedure.

The Augmentin should be taken with food and the Peridex used before bedtime. Patients allergic to Augmentin will only receive the Peridex.

3. Do NOT take the Augmentin on the morning of your surgery but DO take 3 Ibuprofen (200 mg each) with a small amount of water 90 minutes before surgery.

Rinse with Peridex before you leave home for your appointment. Resume the Augmentin the evening of your surgery, once you are able to tolerate soft foods.

We recommend eating a light meal prior to taking the antibiotic.

4. Short sleeve clothing should be worn for easy access to the upper arm.

5. The sedated patient must be driven home by an adult (at least 18 yrs old). A responsible party must be at the office during your procedure.

Someone should remain at home with you until your sedation has subsided. Sedated patients will NOT be allowed to leave the office unescorted.

ON THE DAY OF SURGERY, PATIENTS ACCEPTING SEDATION/ANESTHESIA MUST AGREE NOT TO:

1.     Drive a vehicle or operate machinery.

2.     Undertake responsible business matters.

3.     Drink alcohol.
